Abstract
Former gymnast Rachael Denhollander played a lead-role in bringing Dr Larry Nassar to account in 2016-2018 for sexual abuse dating back many years against hundreds of girls and young women, as described in her book, What is a Girl Worth? (2019). Denhollander is a qualified attorney whose work includes survivor advocacy on sexual abuse issues, especially in cases involving churches and faith-based institutions. This chapter discusses Nassar’s ability to disguise his abuse and keep it 'hidden in plain sight'. It examines how the abuse went unrecognised for so long and why Denhollander believes that the widespread failure of authorities to ask the right questions enabled Nassar’s abuses and allowed him to continue for so long. It then argues that asking the right questions is equally important when giving attention to sexual abuses in the bible and more specifically the abuses associated with crucifixion. It discusses recent work on crucifixion that names the stripping and enforced nudity of crucifixion as intentional acts of sexual abuse. It argues that as in the Nassar case, it is only when the right questions are asked, that the sexually abusive nature of these aspects of Roman crucifixions become obvious.
