Abstract
Assisted dying came into effect in Aotearoa New Zealand on 7 November 2021, 12 months after the Act was approved by public referendum and almost 2 years after its final parliamentary vote. There had been two previous attempts to introduce similar legislation in 1995 and 2003. In this chapter, we discuss various aspects relating to the passage of assisted dying legislation through the New Zealand Parliament as well as offering some early and brief observations regarding its impact on palliative care.
