Abstract
Campylobacteriosis is a gastrointestinal disease that affects millions of people every year. Although most cases go unreported, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, it is still the most commonly identified cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in many countries. Although the effects are usually self-limiting, complications may be serious, long-lasting, or even fatal. Contaminated food (mainly poultry) is the most common source of infection in humans, but infection can also result from drinking contaminated water, and contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated environments. Further research is needed to guide development, implementation, and evaluation of control measures.
