Abstract

Automated insulin delivery Closed loop Continuous glucose monitoring Insulin pump Type 1 diabetes
Diabetes technologies including continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automated insulin delivery (AID) are evolving at an increasingly rapid pace. Evidence is now clear that CGM and AID are the current "gold-standard" for diabetes care in children, adolescents, and beyond. Incorporating diabetes technology into routine care leads to improvements in both glycemia and psychosocial outcomes. With modern systems, this led to overall reductions in disease burden. Importantly, these positive impacts often extend to parents, caregivers, and the wider family. Here, we review currently available diabetes technologies and present a summary of recent evidence. Equity issues, barriers to uptake, safety, and future directions are covered. We hope this chapter provides a core background to this vital area of diabetes care and leaves readers excited about what technology can offer, opportunities for the future, and most importantly how technology can improve the lives of children and families living with diabetes worldwide.
