Abstract
This chapter explores digitally mediated communication (DMC), defining what it is and outlining the characteristics of DMC technologies. These are explained in relation to key theories such as social presence, media richness and media synchronicity theory, as well as through the lens of interpersonal affordances. Broadly, these technologies are split into video and audio, and text-based DMC with analyses of the implications of key technologies such as chat, video conferencing and synchronous file sharing. The key workplace implications of engaging with DMC are then discussed.
