Abstract
This chapter examines the conversations staged on Twitter during the Inaugural U20 Mayoral Summit in Buenos Aires with the aim of examining how cities participating in these events are promoted as part of a staged event of city diplomacy. The findings reveal the limited representation of the host in the conversation highlighting a missed opportunity for the city to leverage the event to elevate awareness of the city’s role in city diplomacy, the city’s unique characteristics and initiatives that contribute to achieving the Urban 20’s (U20) purpose and goals. Likewise, the positive words featured in the tweets related to the event, as much, if not more than the host itself. Considering the large number of member cities of the broader C40 network and the 25 cities in the U20 group, only a small proportion of members contributed to the conversation studied in this chapter. More cities were mentioned by other tweeps in relation to their participation in this event, highlighting the connections forged between cities in these diplomatic networks.
