Abstract
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (11th ed.; ICD-11) classifies personality disorders (PD) according to severity, followed by the option of coding one or more trait domain specifiers that contribute to the individual expression of personality dysfunction. After a brief historical–scientific record of how the model has evolved, this chapter focuses on the now official ICD-11 PD model and the emerging research that has been conducted in relation to it. It specifically provides an overview of the empirical validity and utility of the ICD-11 PD classification. Based on its similarities (and boundaries) with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) Alternative DSM-5 Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), the authors derive some of its empirical support from the large body of existing research on the AMPD framework.
