Abstract
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, regenerative tourism approaches have been encouraged by the New Zealand Government as a means of reforming the tourism system in a way that prioritises and enriches community well-being. Accordingly, destinations, operators and communities across Aotearoa have been evolving their understandings of what this approach means in their unique places, both conceptually and in practice. This chapter explores the development and evolution of regenerative tourism approaches in Aotearoa New Zealand via a range of conceptual and empirical research from this context. In particular, this chapter analyses findings from studies of regenerative tourism planning and community well-being in destinations across Aotearoa New Zealand.
