Abstract
Aotearoa New Zealand is an island nation in the South Pacific with an ethnically-diverse human population, a high proportion of endemic plants and animals, many of which are under threat from habitat loss and introduced pests, and amongst the highest per capita contributions to greenhouse gas emissions in the world. The country is governed by a democratically-elected sovereign parliament, in the historical context of Te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 between the British Crown and Māori (the country's original inhabitants).
Although Aotearoa New Zealand has some sophisticated policy, strategy and outcome-oriented sustainability educational-frameworks in operation, this chapter emphasises our need for organised and committed leadership towards environmental and sustainability education, research and evaluation of educational change and impact, and educational commitment to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
