Abstract
Hector's dolphin was formally described as Electra hectori by Van Beneden in 1881, named in honor of Sir James Hector, the first director of the Colonial Museum (now National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa). Previously, the species had been referred to as Lagenorhynchus clanculus and Electra clancula. Hector (1885) recognized the species to be a member of the Cephalorhynchus genus. Subsequent synonyms include C. albifrons and C. hectori bicolor. The primary synonyms of the species is summarized in Baker (1978).
