The total number of described and known, yet undescribed, marine acanthocephalan species in the Aotearoa New Zealand region is 32 species, in 15 genera, eight families and two classes (Table 11.1; Fig. 11.1). The current New Zealand species total is about 3.4% of the global total of about 1000 species. Since the previous review by Shiel et al. (2009), one new genus and three new acanthocephalan species have been described, one species has been recorded for the first time in New Zealand, and five new taxa have been recorded from the New Zealand EEZ that remain unnamed or unidentified. A checklist of extant New Zealand Acanthocephala is provided.
