Abstract
The total number of described and known, but undescribed, extant marine nematode species from the Aotearoa New Zealand region is 376 species, 254 of which are free-living and 122 parasitic (Tables 33.1–33.4; Figs 33.1– 33.3). The current New Zealand species total is about 2–5% of the global total and about 5–20% of the estimated total for New Zealand. Since the previous review by Yeates (2010), nine new genera and 132 new nematode species have been described. The known nematode diversity for New Zealand waters has more than doubled over the last two decades, largely due to the description of new free-living species. A checklist of extant New Zealand Nematoda is provided.
