Abstract
The field of bioceramics is comparatively new in the regenerative field as it did not exist up until the early 1970s. Bioceramics are used to repair, replace or even reconstruct parts of the human body where these complex living tissues have different chemical natures and properties. Bioceramic materials have already demonstrated a remarkable potential for high-value biomaterials in bone tissue engineering applications. Bioceramic materials are also utilised in dental treatments to restore osteoarticular allograft reconstruction but, most importantly, act as an alternative to autografts and allografts in bone reconstruction. Bioactive bioceramics can be used as either an alternative or addition to bone designed specifically for a variety of procedures, including orthopaedic applications, dental treatments, scaffolds for tissue engineering or as drug delivery systems. Overall, this book chapter focusses on the opportunities, challenges and future of bioceramics, highlighting their specific applications in bone and tooth regeneration.
