Abstract
A number of recent developments have resulted in an increased focus upon the development and function of the lymphatic system. This system provides essential physiological functions, including fluid homeostasis and lipid transport. Various abnormalities of the lymphatic system are described. Lymphangiectasia, which may be primary or secondary, is an important cause of lymphatic dysfunction that has numerous common manifestations, especially increased enteric loss of proteins. While secondary lymphangiectasia may be corrected by attention to the underlying cause, primary lymphangiectasia is considered incurable. Various nutritional and medical interventions can be considered for primary lymphangiectasia.
