Abstract
This chapter focuses on the realisation that many human families include intimate non-human members. These are not just 'pets' but close companions of the human family, or individual members of it, who are sometimes referred to as 'fur babies'. The chapter identifies the scale and diversity of the animal companion population and the families they live in. It discusses the importance of animals to human family and individual well-being and the resulting emotional connections between them. Based on this, the chapter explores the importance to the sustainability of the tourism industry of catering to the needs of these families and their members. In doing so, it discusses how well the tourism industry currently caters to these families and their human and more-than-human members and what it needs to do to improve its service delivery.
