Abstract
In the Introduction to this volume, we began with a story. We related the experience of James Jones, who had run into trouble with the authorities in Whanganui, New Zealand over failing to register his dog with the local government. In successive court hearings, Jones made clear that he did not regard himself as bound by the laws of New Zealand. He was a sovereign man born free who had not consented to abide by statutory law, and he had not contracted with the corporation known as the New Zealand Government. Jones did not succeed at any stage. Nevertheless, he persisted in his claims. Why?
