Abstract
This chapter overviews the unique national contexts that underpin employment relations in Australia and New Zealand to highlight the ways in which different sustainability strands have been influenced by a rich indigenous tapestry to inform human resource management (HRM) practices before overlaying this with a discussion on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The journey towards sustainable HRM for both countries has, however, not been an easy one, and while many SDGs resonate and cohere with aspects of Aboriginal and Māori culture, their effective integration into the cultural fabric of these societies is nuanced. Drawing on history and language to illustrate this complexity, this chapter presents readers with an array of examples drawn from the public and private sectors to evidence HRM's role in implementation and progress towards SDG achievement.
