Abstract
Although research in transport equity has focused predominantly on inequalities in transport provision, less attention has been paid to the ways in which the transport system creates inequities in a range of health outcomes, including in levels of physical activity, road traffic injuries, pedestrian injuries, respiratory conditions related to air pollution, the costs of transport and mental health outcomes and the ability to access employment, education and healthcare appointments. Drawing on a range of examples from Aotearoa New Zealand, this chapter explores the ways in which changes to the transport system aimed at addressing global challenges can improve or exacerbate health inequities. Although forthcoming changes in mobility offer huge potential to address health inequities, there are also concerns about the exacerbation of inequities. These issues will be discussed in this chapter and readers will be prompted to consider the implications of proposed mobility solutions from a health perspective.
