Abstract
This chapter sets the scene for the book by discussing its ambit, rationale, and key themes, framed by the child's right to preserve their identity without unlawful interference as enshrined in Article 8 of the UNCRC. Children's identity and selfhood in the context of family law and related areas are explored through what is meant by the concepts of identity and selfhood, by Article 8 and its companion Articles, and then by family law in both its domestic and cross-border contexts. The ways in which the book is making a novel and groundbreaking contribution to the field are discussed. An overview of the book's 16 other chapters highlights the impact that life events and transformations can have on children's identity. Some final reflections and future directions are offered on the nexus between children's identity, selfhood and family law.
