Abstract
The research on which this chapter was based is doctoral research exploring indigenous perceptions of sustainable land development (SLD) in Fiji. The research investigated how the indigenous (iTaukei) people perceive and are impacted by two distinct but inter-related components: Vanua Ecology, focused on ecological dimensions, and Political Ecology, which specifically examined the government's approach and implementation of the SLD approaches. Enriched by the first-hand experience of an indigenous knowledge seeker, this chapter delves into the intricacies of conducting research within the iTaukei community. The chapter begins by introducing the iTaukei worldview, followed by a detailed account of the culturally specific methodological approaches employed during fieldwork research in Fiji. The last section emphasises the importance of interrogating Western methodologies and approaches to fieldwork research. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of cultivating trust and fostering veiwekani (relationships) with the iTaukei community.
