Abstract

Australasian-Pacific History Environmental History History Imperial and Colonial History
In this chapter I shall examine the intersection of Trollope’s writing about farming, land clearance and his discussions of race during his Australasian travels, paying particular attention to his time in Australia. Further, I shall argue that he returned repeatedly to this intersection in the years that followed his first trip by revisiting his two Australian novels and reconsidering the conspicuous absence of race, and empathy, from both works.
