Abstract
Overview:
This interactive workshop provided participants with foundational knowledge to understand and later apply the Hui Process and Meihana Model as decolonising tools for Māori health equity. The session focused on building participants' understanding of colonisation's impacts and introducing culturally safe frameworks, rather than practical application during the workshop itself.
Key Content:
- Understanding Colonisation: Exploration of how colonisation has historically and systemically affected Māori health and wellbeing.
- The Hui Process: Introduction to this structured, culturally grounded engagement framework for use with Māori patients and whānau.
- The Meihana Model: Overview of this clinical assessment framework that expands biomedical models to include colonisation, racism, socio-economic context, cultural factors, and physical environment.
- Decolonising Tools: Explanation of how both the Hui Process and Meihana Model can function as decolonising tools by centering Māori worldviews and addressing systemic barriers.
Workshop Focus:
The session established essential theoretical and conceptual foundations, equipping participants with the knowledge of how to apply these tools in their own clinical or institutional settings, without hands-on application during the workshop.
