Abstract
This qualitative study examined the mental health impacts of New Zealand's Green Prescription (GRx) program through interviews with 15 former participants. While traditionally viewed as a physical health initiative, most participants (12/15) reported significant mental health improvements through the program. Key benefits included empowerment through strengths-based approaches, reduced social isolation, increased hope and purpose, and practical coping strategies developed through physical activity. Participants with existing mental health conditions found GRx complemented their standard psychiatric care by providing practical lifestyle support often missing from conventional treatment. As a free, nationwide service, GRx represents a valuable adjunctive resource for treating patients with mild-to-moderate mental health conditions or comorbid physical health challenges. By incorporating GRx referrals into treatment planning, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals can provide additional recovery-oriented support while addressing physical health disparities common in mental health populations.
