Abstract

equity Māori health Secondary services Te hauora me te oranga o te Māori (Māori health and wellbeing)
Mā te ara tika e whai hua ai By following the correct pathway, benefit will be gained. This whakataukī reminds us that embedding equity into our business-as-usual clinical and organisational processes is the correct way to deliver healthcare. Equity is not a “nice to have” or an optional add-on — it is fundamental to high-quality, effective, and ethical care.Despite strong intentions, health inequities for Māori continue across specialist and surgical services. This session challenges leaders to move beyond cultural awareness and into practical, system-level action. This presentation introduces the Hauora Māori Equity Toolkit for Specialist Healthcare Services—a leadership-focused framework designed to embed equity into everyday practice. Co-designed with clinicians, managers, and Māori health experts, and piloted within surgical services, the toolkit provides clear, achievable actions that leaders can use to drive measurable change. Through real-world examples, attendees will explore how theatre and service managers can strengthen access, address systemic racism, build workforce capability, and improve outcomes for Māori patients. This session is ideal for leaders who want practical tools, clear accountability, and innovative approaches to delivering equitable, high-quality care in specialist healthcare settings.
