Abstract
Serum from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently produces demyelination of cultured central nervous system tissue. Of interest is the recent morphological and physiological evidence of peripheral nerve demyelination in MS. It therefore seemed appropriate to assess MS sera for a possible demyelinating effect on the peripheral nervous system.
A subperineurial injection technique was used to bypass the blood-nerve barrier because of its reported success in permitting the transfer of the demyelinating effect of serum from cases of experimental allergic neuritis.
