Abstract
Since β blockade has been used clinically to treat cardiovascular manifestations of thyrotoxicosis the effect of propranolol on the collagen content of the heart was studied in rats given amounts of thyroxine (T2) sufficient to induce hyperthyroidism. It is concluded that although an increase in collagen content does contribute to the cardiac hypertrophy induced by T4 the increase in noncollagenous tissue is relatively greater. Propranolol does not alter these responses in hyperthyroidism.
