Abstract
Effective onboarding of radiation therapists (RT) is critical to support adoption of local workflows as well as broader integration into a new workplace. With continued growth across our network of cancer centres, a need was identified to develop a streamlined approach to delivering and supporting RT onboarding. Additionally, simplifying and standardising onboarding content assignment that meets the diverse needs of sites and individuals’ needs was essential. A project was undertaken to engage with recently onboarded RT staff to support the development of an updated resource and process.
Semi-structured interviews were held with RT staff from across the network in various locations, career backgrounds and experience levels to gain insights from their experiences of being onboarded to the network within the previous 12 to 18 months. Feedback from interviewees was utilised to inform development of onboarding resources guided by an interdisciplinary approach. These are anticipated to be useful, time-efficient and responsive to the learner as well as their local departmental needs.
Common themes in feedback surrounded clarity of tasks, timeframes, volume and appropriateness of content, the onboarding experience and challenges with system navigation. This feedback was considered when developing an RT onboarding journal to be implemented for use across the network. Preliminary feedback from pilot use of the journal indicate that it is fit for purpose and provides helpful guidance in delivering RT onboarding.
