Abstract
“During the latter part of the year the writer had the opportunity of examining some of the “strippings” from a Southland Flax Mill, and of subjecting them to various chemical tests. Much has been done in past years on the physical and chemical properties of this plant, but little has been published and the literature on the subject is vague: it was thought that, on this account, brief notes on the research and an outline of the work done would be acceptable and pave the way for a fuller treatment. the main interest in the flax plant lies of course in its commercial use, but there are several interesting purely chemical points connected with it and it was with these that the research mainly dealt.” [Extract from thesis]
