Abstract
In view of the conflicting hypotheses which exist as to the nature of these [argentaffin] cells and their function, a study has been made of the argentaffin cells of the mucous membrane of the small intestine in the guinea-pig in an endeavour if possible to reconcile some of these divergent opinions.
Initially my investigations involved a histological study of the nature of the argentaffin cells in the intestinal tract of some mammals. As the investigation proceeded however it became apparent that a relationship may exist between these cells and certain at least of the mucous cells of the intestine. The present thesis embodies the original results of my researches on this problem in the guinea-pig, mouse and man.
