Book 17 of Diodorus' Bibliotheke covers the campaigns of Alexander the Great, from his accession in 336 BC to his death in 323 BC. This thesis provides a fresh translation and commentary for the first half of Book 17, up to and including the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC. Special attention is given to Diodorus' coverage of the Persians, his account of the expedition to Siwa, and those points where he provides us with either details or digressions that do not appear in the other Alexander sources.
