[…] For several years I studied very carefully the pretensions of various mesmerists, faith healers, etc, but until I had travelled in the East I was sadly convinced that there were many liars in the world and the greatest of these were Mental healers. In China and other eastern parts my eyes were abruptly opened to the fact that there undoubtedly does exist the power of mental suggestion and that this power may be honestly used to alleviate certain nervous ailments, to controvert many mental neuroses, and in some cases to completely change the nature or a man for better or for evil. I commenced the practical use of' "Suggestion" in I905. After treating a considerable number of neurotic cases with gratifying success, I wrote a paper on Hypnotism and presented it for discussion to the New Zealand Medical Congress of' I906.
