With the widespread implementation of electronic health record systems and access to “big data,” the use of existing data to employ machine learning and develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to inform clinical decisions in real time is moving from an imagined future possibility toward a reality. Many of us clinicians still grapple with what machine learning and AI entails, let alone how it is developed or validated.
