Abstract
Important methodological questions arise when we ask how cohort studies that include respiratory function measurements from throughout the life course can produce new knowledge about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Better or earlier detection of pre-COPD and greater understanding of COPD's development would be valuable in addressing its high burden.
