Abstract
Wound healing is a major health challenge that rarely attracts headline attention. Poor wound healing can be a complication following surgery or trauma and is common in patients with diabetes, in the elderly with leg ulcers, and in patients immobilized for extended periods with pressure ulcers. Non-healing or slow-healing wounds have a significant impact on patient quality of life, causing pain and discomfort and often leading to social isolation, depression, and financial stress. The long-term nature of nursing care for wounds also represents a substantial financial burden on health resources. Hence, any advances in knowledge resulting in more effective wound repair would provide welcome relief to both patients and clinicians.
