Abstract

A-theory B-Theory McTaggart Metaphysics Temporal passage Tense Time
The central debate in the philosophy of time concerns the question of whether or not time is tensed, that is, whether or not the distinction between past, present and future reflects a real distinction in time, or merely a person-relative, perspectival one. This article explains the significance of this debate, detailing challenges facing each side, charts its history, and discusses the different roles that tense in language has played in it.
