Abstract
This study examines the performance of maternal and child health (MCH) strategies in Myanmar. It provides an understanding of MCH projects/ interventions in Myanmar over the past twenty years (2000-2020), specifically, how different MCH strategies have been implemented in addressing MCH challenges. The study does this by comparing MCH strategies in Myanmar with those in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam over the same period. Document analysis was conducted by analysing publicly available documents from governmental and non-governmental organisations’ official websites and research publications from academic databases. The facilitators and barriers of MCH programmes implemented in the four countries were identified and discussed. The common critical factors for successful MCH programmes which can be applied to Myanmar were engagement with the community; collaboration within the health system and non-health sectors; and capability, capacity, and resourcing of the health system. Recommendations for the Myanmar government were to invest in health system strengthening and integrating these key factors in implementing MCH strategies in Myanmar.
