Abstract

The purpose of this study is to consider the introduction of the new television channel into what was once a monopolised market. In the year 2000, it is relatively common knowledge that the applicants for, and winner of, the third channel licence did not have an easy path laid down for them. The winning contender which became known as TV3 (Televid 3) faced a number of challenges to its existence, both before and after its establishment. From the interference of the BCNZ, to the Wall Street crash of 1987, to the sudden deregulation of the whole industry - nothing was ever made easy for the newcomer, despite the fact that most of the players in New Zealand broadcasting circles had agreed that the introduction of a third channel was a necessary measure.
