Abstract
This report is presented in six distinct sections that analyse the feasibility of exporting the Jimmy's Pie product range. This reports provides a wide range of important information and points to consider when deciding whether to implement an export strategy. There are two main research objectives that have been used in the development of this report. Firstly to determine whether it was legally possible to export a Jimmy's Pie into a foreign market(s) and also to investigate how and where the product could be distributed and sold. The second objective of this report has been to provide some generic exporting information in terms of exporting a New
Zealand manufactured food product.
This report has discovered that it is indeed possible to export any product made in New Zealand. However not all foreign countries will accept some New Zealand products. Nonetheless the exportation of a meat pie into the Australian market is legally possible. This study has identified Australia as being the most appropriate export destination for a Jimmy's Pie. The reason for this is mainly due to the close proximity of this market, similar culture, and also because of the Close Economic Relations agreement that exists between the two nations.
The markets of Sydney and Melbourne have been identified as being potential points for entry within this market. However the report also discovered that although there are no legislative barriers for conducting international trade with Australia there is a very bureaucratic licensing and certification process that must be completed prior to exportation. In addition to being in compliance with New Zealand regulations a consignment of Jimmy's Pies must also satisfy Australian Customs and Quarantine services.
As part of the export licensing process Jimmy's Pies Ltd. believed that it would require an additional facility to produce a product for the export market. After consultation with a Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries official it has been discovered that this is no longer the case. Due to this fact the production of a Jimmy's Pie for the export market seems to present the company with many favourable business opportunities.
