Abstract
This study explored the differences between an on-camera and off-camera narrator in documentary films, and its possible relation to audience recall. It aimed to answer whether audiences recall more, less, or the same amount of information when presented with an on-screen narrator as opposed to an off-screen narrator. As empirical research on the matter was severely lacking, a quantitative study was designed that used a tailor-made excerpt of the film Plough! (2010) to test the research question. Data was collected through the use of a survey distributed to audiences after watching a randomly selected film. The data indicated that there was no significant difference between the groups tested. Due to some limitations of this study further research into documentary audience experiences with the narrated voice was encouraged.
