Abstract
This thesis is not a general study of the fruit industry in Otago but a research into the special topic raised by the report of the New Zealand Government committee of enquiry on Fruit Marketing which reported in 1937 as that topic affects the industry in Otago. Economic research will be aided by a practical knowledge of the industry and experience in the production of fruit in Central Otago, but as far as possible I have refrained from expressing personal opinions.
It is therefore my aim to outline the conditions at present prevailing in the fruit growing industry of Otago, to note any characteristics of the industry which place limitations on otherwise feasible changes and to examine the manner in which the industry is satisfying the community's demand for fruit.
