Abstract

[…] The primary purpose of the present study is to reveal as clearly as possible the structure and stratigraphy of the pre-Cretaceous basement rocks, mainly the Otago schist, of the area, and to determine if possible the relationship of structure and stratigraphy to the grade of metamorphism. The area dealt with extends southwestward away from the supposed band of highest grade metamorphism roughly in the vicinity of Dunedin, and toward the southwestern boundary of the schist belt and the fossiliferous Permian rocks beyond. Because the area is entirely within the schist belt itself there is no precise evidence of the age of the formations or the age of the metamorphism, and this problem will not be dealt with extensively in this paper.
