Abstract
Accounts have been published on the structure and function of the alimentary system of the limpet (Graham, 1932) and style-bearing Prosobranchs, (Graham, 1939). In the Oristhobranchs, a dorid (Millott, 1937); an aeolid (Graham, 1938); tectibranch molluscs (Fretter, 1939); Aplysia punctata (Howells, 1942); ascoglossan nudibranchs (Fretter, 1940); and Onchidella celtica (Fretter, 1943) have all been examined with reference to their alimentary anatomy and feeding habits.
Consideration of the growing literature on this aspect of Gastropod functional morphology, and the feeding habits of such a primitive pulmonate and specialised detritus feeder, as Amphibola, has led to the present investigation , where an attempt has been made to correlate the feeding mechanism, mechanical action of the gut, and the nature and distribution of the enzymes with the food of the animal.
