Abstract
The object of the present work was to examine the effects of substituents on the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of acylanilides. It was hoped that the results obtained would throw some light on the structure of acetanilide. During the course of the work, the absorption spectra of acetanilide, propionanilide, N-ethuylacetanilide and o-, m- and p-chloreacetanilide, N-methylacetanilide and w-trichloracetanilide in cyclohexane. The heats of combustion of acetanilide, N-methylacetanilide and N-ethylacetanilde were determined and their resonance energies calculated.
