Abstract
Type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was not observed in youth until three decades ago, and therefore there is little research examining the psychosocial factors impacting these individuals. This study uses an integrative review approach to examine existing literature on the phenomena of psychosocial factors in youth with T2DM. The aim of this review is to gain understanding of the psychosocial factors affecting youth with T2DM. Inclusion criteria included studies with participants aged ?24 years, all methodologies, and literature published since 2010. Twenty-two studies were included in this study following appraisal using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tools. Four synthesis was created representing the examined data, these were social determinants, social support, ability to self management, and psychological factors impacting youth with T2DM. Future research should focus on best methods for family interventions for youth and how to improve self-management through changing fatalistic attitudes of youths and their passive acceptance of diabetes.
