Abstract
The Neck/Te Wahi a Te Wera has rich traditional and historical associations for Ngāi Tahu Whānui. The current understanding of archaeological heritage at The Neck, however, can be described succinctly by this quote from the Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy and Rakiura National Park Management Plan: “Signs of Māori occupation have been recorded around the shores of Paterson Inlet/Whaka a Te Wera and tradition places much importance on the islands within the inlet and off the nearby coast. Archaeological understanding of Māori use of the area is limited…” (DOC 2012: 92). The purpose of this paper is to make available information from unpublished research by Les Lockerbie during the 1960s.
