•Mega sports events must respond urgently to the climate crisis.•COVID travel restrictions reduced Tokyo Olympics Games transport CO2 emissions.•Reduced attendance of Olympics-related personnel saved 129,686.0 tCO2 emissions.•This reduction equates to 38.1% of the travel emissions of overseas spectators.•Minimising event-related personnel reduces gross sports event emissions.
