Abstract

environment geospatial population children and youth Māori taiao mokowā ā-nuku taupori ngā tamariki me ngā rangatahi
The environment impacts the health of children and has lasting impacts over their life course. This is particularly important for tamariki (children, 0-14 years) and rangatahi (youth, 15-24 years) Māori who face persistent inequities and have an integral connection to the land. Yet, there is little nationwide research in this area. Using individual-level microdata and nationwide environmental and socio-economic data, this research applies descriptive and regression analysis to examine the environments of children and youth in Aotearoa New Zealand, focusing on tamariki and rangatahi Māori. Findings show that tamariki and rangatahi Māori have good access to greenspace, bluespace, fruit and vegetable stores, and dairies. However, it is important to recognise the impact on health and social outcomes is complex and multifaceted. Ka pāngia te hauora o ngā tamariki e te taiao, ā, ka pūmau tonu aua pānga puta noa i te oranga. He mea tino hira tēnei ki ngā tamariki (0-14 tau) me ngā rangatahi (ngā taiohi, 15–24 tau) Māori e pēhia ana e ngā tautika-kore tarariki, kua whai hononga hira ki te whenua. Ahakoa tērā, he iti noa iho te rangahau ā-motu mō tērā āhuatanga. Mā te whakamahi i ngā raraunga e aro ana ki ngā tāngata takitahi me ngā raraunga taiao me te ohapori ka whakahāngai tēnei rangahau i te tātaritanga whakaheke ki te mātai i ngā taiao o ngā tamariki me ngā rangatahi i Aotearoa, me te arotahi ki ngā tamariki me ngā rangatahi Māori. E whakaatu nei ngā kitenga kua whai urunga papai ngā tamariki me ngā rangatahi ki ngā wāhi kākāriki, ngā wāhi wai, ngā toa huarākau me te huawhenua, me ngā toa. Heoi, he mea nui te mōhio he matatini ngā pānga ki ngā putanga hauora me te pāpori.
