Abstract
Background: Proper alignment of the second molars is a key objective in orthodontic therapy. Failure to involve these teeth in orthodontic treatment can lead to increased loss of anchoring and inadequate control over the arch, not only in the anteroposterior direction but also in the vertical and transverse directions.
Objective: This study aims to examine the optimal timing and circumstances for placing the second molars, while also seeking to understand the impacts and adverse effects of using bands or tubes in orthodontic treatment on the second molars.
Material and Methods: An automated search was conducted in electronic databases, including PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, DOAJ, and Google Scholar. The search utilised keywords such as 2nd molars, bands or bonds 2nd molar, open bite case, and deep bite case.
Conclusion: The study has effectively measured the benefits and drawbacks of initially including second molars in treatment, which has been found to aid in regulating the molars’ angular movement. The additional time needed for the application of a second molar band is very worthwhile, given the significant advantages it offers.
