Abstract
This year New Zealand’s School Dental Service (SDS) turns 100 years-old. The Service was founded as a response to the poor oral health of many New Zealand children; however, political, social, and economic challenges would determine its direction over the next few decades.
The story of New Zealand’s School Dental Service is also inextricably linked to the development of a new career for women, that of dental nursing or dental therapy.
