Abstract

diagnosis infection peri-prosthetic prevention treatment
Peri-prosthetic joint infections (PJI) of hip and knee are complex management challenges. This paper sets out an algorithmic approach to PJI, including updated definitions, diagnostic tests and imaging modalities. Prevention of PJI is reviewed, as is the host of treatment options of which surgery is only one component. Implant retention is compared with single or two-stage replacement together with a discussion of adjuvant antibiotic therapy.
